I got the chance to attend the MBA Orlando Pride in Business Awards at the Renaissance Orlando near SeaWorld! I was so lucky to be able to go. The entire event was so glamorous! From the VIP reception to the main event, the awards ceremony was produced beautifully. Later on in the weekend, I got to meet one of my favorite celebrities, comedienne Sheryl Underwood! You may know her from The Talk on CBS Daytime. I gave her a copy of Hotspots! We also had two pageants in Tampa: Nairobi D’Viante crowned her successor Anjila Cavalier as Miss City Side, and Nicole Monet crowned her successor Dena Cass as Miss GaYBOR. Congratulations ladies! And now, here are this week’s fun events. Lots of love to you all!
Thursday May 8
If you get a chance, visit the Metro Wellness & Community Centers’ St. Pete Center. All month they will be displaying the art of out gay artist Dan Kantu. If you like what you see, you can buy it; a portion of the cost will benefit Metro’s LGBT Center!
I read this on BarCodes‘ facebook page (friend them at facebook.com/barcodesorlando), and I thought this was the best description of their weekly ’80s night. I quote, “Where else can you hear The Cure, Samantha Fox, Dokken, Tiffany, Deborah Harry, Prince, and Depeche Mode all at the same place, with random clips from Mommie Dearest?” The answer is obviously BarCodes in Orlando. Time travel back to the totally rad ’80s every Thursday starting at 8 p.m.
Friday May 9
Thank God it’s Friday! Joey Brooks at Bradley’s on 7th in Tampa will help you celebrate the arrival of the weekend right with two fun drag shows at 11:30 p.m. and 1:15 a.m.! Tonight Joey welcomes Esme Russell and special guest Anjila Cavalier! If you want to pop in tomorrow night for a show, the showtimes are the same and Joey will be performing with Monica Moore and Kori Stevens.
Halleloo! Shangela, the Debutantess of the Deep South and RuPaul’s Drag Race fan favorite, is back in Florida! I got to see her at Liquid Tampa a few weeks ago and she was the sweetest thing. She knows how to put on a show too, so you are going to LOVE seeing her at Parliament House in Orlando! She will be performing with the acclaimed Footlight Players at 10 p.m. and midnight. It’s also DJ Scott Robert’s birthday so be sure to wish him well!
Saturday May 10
Last week we profiled Sawmill Resort in Dade City, specifically their fundraiser for testicular cancer. Tonight is their “c-ck in a sock contest,” where the contestants compete for tips from other customers. The winner gets $500 and $500 is donated to the charity “Single Jingles.” I said it last week and I’ll say it again, I hope the winner donates some of their winnings to the charity too! The contest follows the drag game show that starts at 9 p.m.
The Tampa Bay Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are hosting a Wig Drive and Show, benefiting Faces of Courage, at Flamingo Resort in St. Petersburg. The Sisters are collecting wigs, scarves, hats, prosthetics and funds at Flamingo for people in the community who are in special need. The Girl Power Drag Show starts at 8 p.m., with tips going to Faces of Courage. There will also be a raffle with proceeds being donated as well.
Enjoy a party around the world at Parliament House in Orlando! There will be food, drinks and entertainment from six different nations: Germany, Ireland, Brazil, Japan, Canada and Mexico! DJ Brianna will be providing the music tonight. The event starts at 8 p.m. and there’s an $8 cover charge.
Sunday May 11
Sunday night is now home to a fun drag queen bingo game at Hamburger Mary’s in Clearwater! Melanie Minyon will be pulling the balls and calling the shots as you have fun and donate to a well-deserving local charity in the process (yes, what you pay for your cards is a donation to charity!). Game time is at 7 p.m. Call ahead for reservations: (727) 400-6996.
